A 29-year-old man has been charged before t an Eldoret court for stealing goods worth Sh37 million from a popular club in the town during the Finance Bill protests.
The list of goods listed as having been stolen from the club during the protests include meat and managu vegetables.
Jonathan Paul Mutua appeared before Principal Magistrate Cheronoh Kesse where he denied two counts of breaking into a building, committing a felony and handling stolen goods.
According to the charge sheet, Mutua in the company of others who are still at large broke into Baniyas Club Square on June 25 and stole items including alcohol, electronics, sound systems, utensils, gas cylinders, chairs and food items all valued at more than Sh37 million.
The alternative charge states that the suspect dishonestly retained a channel sound craft mixer, a mini pearl controller DMX and an HDMI box knowing or having reason to believe the items were stolen goods.
An inventory of stolen goods was attached to the charge sheet.
The multi-million club located along Uganda Road was raided and looted during the protests last week on the same day, the Timber Xo club associated with Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi was looted.
The court heard that a group of youths is said to have stormed the Baniyas club where they reportedly demanded food while at the club gate before breaking the gate and stealing several items including alcoholic drinks.
Police officers from Kamukunji police station claim to have later arrested Mutua at his house where they found some of the items believed to have been stolen from the club.
The prosecutor Sylvester Thuo told the court that the prosecution was not opposed to the suspect being released on bond but the terms should be strict.
He denied the charges and was released on a Sh 10 million bond with a similar surety. The case will be mentioned on July 15.
