An investigating officer told the High Court in Eldoret how a female police officer, Lilian Biwott, fired 12 bullets to kill her husband following constant domestic quarrels between them.

Police Corporal Stephen Nzau said investigations had revealed that Biwott and her husband Victor Kipchumba, quarrelled often leading to the incident.

Nzau was testifying before Justice Reuben Nyakundi in a case in which Biwott is accused of murdering her husband using an AK 47 assault rifle.

She had been assigned the firearm for night duties at the Kenya Bureau of Standards, Eldoret branch.

The mother of four allegedly committed the crime on October 14, 2023 at Kimumu estate, Moiben in Uasin Gishu county.

Nzau said on the fateful day, Biwott who was on night duty received a call from her husband after which she left and went to the house where the killing occurred.

The detective attached to the Moiben DCI unit in his evidence said he established the relationship between the two had been toxic, and that there had been several failed attempts by the family to reconcile the two.

“She even at one time asked for a transfer to another station to stay away from her husband,” Nzau said.

The investigating officer said Biwott had at some point reported being assaulted by her husband.

“The deceased had been assaulting her on several occasions, inflicting serious injuries on her head and face,” Nzau said.

On one occasion, Biwott reported that the deceased had assaulted her in front of her workmates at Ainabtich police station.  Following the assault at the station, the deceased was arrested and locked up before the couple's parents intervened and resolved their differences.

Nzau said Biwott used 12 bullets from a magazine of 30 ammunition assigned to her that day.

The investigations officer said according to a statement he recorded from the couple's house help, the deceased called the accused threatening to kill their children and after a while Biwott arrived at the house.

She had rushed to her house on a motorbike apparently to protect her children leading the quarrel and the eventual fatal shooting according the investigations officer.

Nzau further told the court that it is when the deceased flashed out a knife in an attempt to stab his wife, that the accused opened fire killing her husband.

The investigating officer said he recovered the knife on a shelf in the couple's house which he used as an exhibit in the murder trial.

Prosecutor in the case Mark Mugun said they had closed the prosecution against the accused after seven witnesses testified.

Justice Nyakundi directed that a status conference be held on July 31.
