Some Moi University students protested outside the main campus on Monday, demanding that the government scrap the new funding model, which they term discriminative.

The students carrying placards and twigs said they had rejected the decision by their national student leaders to call off protests at all universities.

The students were led by the president of the Moi University Students Organisation Vincent Tarus, and other leaders who said although the government had requested 30 days to sort out the issues on the funding model, they don't believe the state was genuine on the matter.

“We are asking our president to withdraw the new funding model because it will mess up our lives considering that many of us will have to drop out of college," Tarus said.

Other students Wycliffe Mutugi and Christopher Asiago said students from humble backgrounds had been paced in bands they could not afford.

“Our education system is in a mess and we don’t think President Ruto is keen to help us. We wonder why they are forcing on us a model that can not work," Asiago said.

The university Dean of Students, Alice Mutai, addressed the students at the main gate of the college, asking them to give the government time to sort out their grievances as promised.

“I urge you to be patient and give the government time to deal with the issues you have raised as promised.

It’s good, students, you should respect authority," the dean said.

Police officers attached to the university were present but one of them cautioned the students to keep peace as they air their demands.

“As you know, we will only come in if you cause problems and disrupt peace," a senior officer said.

The dean later convinced the students to call off their demonstrations.
