The Maasai Mara University fraternity is mourning the death of a 22-year-old third-year student whose body was retrieved from River Narok Sunday.

According to Narok County Police Commander Riko Ngare, the body had been spotted floating in River Narok in the Morijoi area about ten kilometres from the university.

The police and a team from the Red Cross managed to retrieve the decomposed body and took it to Narok County Referral Hospital morgue where it was positively identified by her kins as that of Valarine Jepkoech.

The 22-year-old student pursuing Communication and Journalism went missing on September 2, 2024, at 11 am and had been reported at Maasai Mara police post as a missing person.

“The mother of the deceased travelled from Eldoret where the family lives to Narok to identify the body of her daughter. We condole with the family for losing their daughter,” Commander Ngare.

The incident happened a few months after two students from the same institution drowned while attempting to cross the flooded river.

The bodies of the two students were retrieved after a week-long search about 10 kilometres from where they had drowned.
