A grade two pupil has drowned while fishing in a river within Cherangany area in Trans Nzoia County.

The pupil was with about 20 others who were fishing in a seasonal river in the area when he fell into the water.

Kibuswo Sublocation Assistant Chief Gilbert Chepsiror said the body of the child had been retrieved and taken to a mortuary.

He said the pupil was a learner at Kuriot Primary within the same area.

Chepsiror said the area had many children loitering because they had been neglected without care.

“I called the father to the child and he told me he has been away from his home for the last six months and does not know where his wife and children are,” Chepsiror said.

He said his office will work with the local administration to arrest and charge all parents who had neglected their child.

“The children are forced to loiter around looking for food on their own because parents have neglected them,” Chepsiror said.

Trans Nzoia police boss Jeremiah Ole Kosiom also confirmed the incident saying it had been reported to the police.
