Police in Eldoret have arrested four suspects linked to a motorcycle theft syndicate in North Rift and Western counties.

One of the suspects was arrested after a motorcycle was stolen outside the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.

He led officers to a garage in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia county, where spare parts and number plates of at least 80 motorcycles were recovered and three more suspects apprehended.

Uasin Gishu county police commander Benjamin Mwanthi said they had received reports on increased theft of motorcycles at the hospital.

He said the recovered spare parts filled up a lorry, indicating theft was rampant in the region.

“The motorcycle theft syndicate has affected many of our youth in the boda boda sector. Some were stolen from parking lots while others were robbed violently from the owners,” Mwanthi said .

He said four other suspects arrested in Eldoret recently were facing court cases.

More than 53 motorcycles were recovered along with spare parts.

“Already, some victims have found their motorcycles from those we recovered,” Mwanthi said.

He urged members of the public to visit the Central police station to check if their lost motorcycles were among those recovered.

Mwanthi said they were working closely with their counterparts in Trans Nzoia to deal with criminals operating in the two regions.

“We will work to bring to book all those perpetrating crime in the region because we want our people to go about their business without fear of insecurity,” Uasin Gishu DCI boss Daniel Muleli said.
