Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii is targeting to improve an additional 1,600km of roads during this financial year to help boost economic development, especially in the agriculture sector.

The government has outlined plans to fast track all infrastructure projects to help achieve its objectives under pillar six of Nguzo Kumi (10-point) development agenda, which focuses on infrastructure development for prosperity.

“With good roads we will be able to ease movement of people and goods, including farm inputs and farm produce for our agriculture sector, which is a key driver of economic growth,” Governor Bii said.

He spoke on Monday at a meeting with officials from the roads department, led by executive Joseph Lagat.

The county boss urged the team to ensure they deliver on all set road projects within timelines so residents can reap benefits of a good infrastructure network.

Lagat said the programme  would include grading of more than 1,000km and gravelling of 600km, marking a significant step toward enhancing infrastructure.

Lagat and Racecourse MCA Amos Kiptanui later inspected the gravelling of roads within the new Midland estate.

He said an improvement program of roads that were destroyed due to heavy rains is underway.

“This gravelling exercise is one of the many projects underway. Despite financial constraints, we are committed to maximising our own source revenue on priority projects,” the roads executive said.

Lagat acknowledged delayed funding has posed financial challenges.

The executive emphasised the county’s determination to effectively utilise available resources to ensure the progress of key infrastructure projects.

The county boss has directed those resources to be directed to priority projects in key sectors.

“We recognise the financial challenges we have, but it’s possible to achieve maximum benefits for our people who yearn for good roads, hospitals, water and schools, among other needs.”
