About 561 households in Uasin Gishu County are set to be connected to electricity within the next 30 days.
Speaking on Wednesday, Governor Jonathan Bii said the project, jointly funded by the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) and the County government, will cost about Sh200 million.
"We have teamed up with REREC through matching funds to finance this project; the county government contributes Sh30 million while REREC matches with another Sh30 million,” the governor said.
“The rest of the money will be funded from the exchequer.”
Governor Bii spoke during the flagging off of electrification materials at the Uasin Gishu county headquarters on Wednesday.
Bii said that about 140 villages drawn from all six subcounties will benefit.
The villages include Sibiloi/Saito, Lelmokwo, Kabiyet, Mobet, and Kap Chemaget.
REREC regional manager for North Rift Engineer Jonah Kosgei said that the corporation was determined to complete the project within the next 30 days.
He said that five contractors have been tasked with completing the project.
REREC signed the MoU with Uasin Gishu County last year, a document that enables the two entities to cooperate to accelerate rural electrification through the matching fund.
Under this model, a county contributes up to Sh5 million per subcounty for rural electrification, while REREC contributes a similar amount.
In the arrangement, the county government is given the leeway to propose areas in which it wants electrification projects implemented
