At least 200 students who have completed Form Four have enrolled for teacher's training in Busia courtesy of sponsorship from MCAs in the county.

The 200 will directly receive tuition fees from the ward development fund in the seven wards.

Those sponsored will undertake their studies at the Busia Teachers Training College.

The students are from Malaba Central Ward, Amukura South, Chakol North and Bukhayo South.

They are also from Bwiri Ward, Nambuku/Namboboto and Bunyala North.

On Saturday the college principal Makokha Khalonyere told the Star that the institution is pushing for a partnership with more wards to enroll more students for training.

Makokha said the programme, if expanded, will help raise the education standards of the residents of Busia as many students continue to enroll in college studies.

He was speaking after Malaba Central MCA Benard Papa handed over 10 students to his institution.

The students’ tuition as well as other upkeep expenses are fully paid.

“I would like to sincerely thank the MCAs of Busia for the cooperation they have extended to Busia Teachers Training College by supporting students. This is the way to go as a community and we will fully support that kind of engagement,” Makokha said.

“To us this cooperation means a lot because it will help in the empowerment of our youth. That is what we need to do as a people of this country.”

Papa said his leadership will champion for the training of youth in the ward.

Besides the 10 students who have been selected to join Busia Teachers Training College, the MCA said his office is also sponsoring 100 youth to undertake driving classes. The youth will receive driving licenses after the training.

“Education is key in the development of any society. That is why we are giving a lot of focus to education,” he said.

He said if re-elected, he plans to raise the number of students enrolling for college studies to 50.

County ECD deputy director Daniel Osere said with the partnership between the wards and Busia Teachers Training College Busia will have many teachers.
