Busia county commissioner Sam Ojwang has assured residents of adequate security.
The commissioner said the high incidents of insecurity reported in the border county when he was posted to Busia have drastically reduced.
He, however, decried cases of domestic violence which he said were still high.
“Before I came to Busia there were a lot of killings happening in here. But the killings reduced because the security team and the deputy county commissioners came together and conducted thorough investigations and those who were involved were arrested. They have cases to answer to in the courts of law and if they are found guilty, they will be jailed,” Ojwang said.
“I want to ask all the people in Busia to work with us closely in ending insecurity in the county.”
He spoke during Mashujaa Day celebrations on Thursday at Busia stadium. Ojwang said fighting insecurity is a task that should involve all residents in the county.
He called on residents to volunteer information that may lead to the arrest and subsequent arraignment of the culprits.
Ojwang also said members of the public should report incidents of insecurity to security agencies for immediate action to be taken.
“On matters insecurity give us reports for us to be able take action,” he said on Friday as he spoke to the media.
The county commissioner warned police officers against harassing people in bars provided that the merry-makers do not drink outside the legally prescribed hours of between 5pm and 11pm.
Those found drunk and disorderly, he said, will be detained until they sober up before being allowed to walk home.
Detaining such people, Ojwang said, will ensure their safety because allowing them to walk in the dark of the night will be endangering their lives.
The better part of early this year saw a series of insecurity incidents reported in Busia.
Most of the cases involved the killing of boda boda riders.
The cases were claimed to be high because those involved targeted new motorcycles from boda boda riders.
Motorcycles of killed boda boda riders were taken and sold elsewhere.
At the height of the killings, close to ten boda boda riders were killed in Teso North subcounty alone.
Other boda boda rider killings were reported in Teso South, Nambale, Butula, Matayos, Samia and Bunyala.
The leadership of boda boda riders in the county at the time blamed police for doing little to curb the cases.
Ojwang said he will closely work with the administration of Governor Paul Otuoma in ensuring Busia residents enjoy peace.
