Luanda constituency residents have been urged to observe the riparian and road reserve lands while doing their development ahead of the upgrade to Luanda municipality.
Speaking to residents in Luanda town yesterday, Luanda Township MCA David Onjiri said most people have illegally encroached on reserved lands.
“We are currently heading into a municipality and most of our roads within the municipality should be of 9-12 metres width to allow for other developments,” Onjiri said.
“Within those municipal roads, we should have power lines, sewage line, network lines and water lines as well.
“So when you encroach the reserve lands, you block the county and any development partners from doing development.”
He said upgrading Luanda town to municipality will come with many goodies and open the town for many business ventures.
Luanda market is the second-largest open-air market in the country after Karatina.
Onjiri was addressing Luanda people while conducting a survey for feeder roads that will ease transport in the town after gravelling.
MCA said with Luanda town becoming a municipality will entitle it to additional funding from the national government through the Kenya Urban Support Programme.
He said once Luanda town attains municipality status, people will experience development in general infrastructure and social amenities.
He cited better sewerage system, street lighting, access to clean water, affordable housing, fire engine to respond to fire disasters and health facilities as well as bus stages.
“I ask my people of Luanda Township ward to support plans that seek to upgrade Luanda town into a municipality,” Onjiri said.
Already, the Vihiga government has allocated Sh202 million in the budget for upgrading Luanda and Cheptul towns into municipalities.
“The Commerce department was allocated Sh202 million, which will be used for improving market infrastructure and upgrading of Luanda and Cheptul towns into municipalities,” Ottichilo said.
He said they have allocated Sh125 million to Lands and Housing, which will be used for special planning in various markets.
