The Kenya Tuitakayo lobby wants Kenyans to boycott sugar to stop politicians from playing politics and profiteering from the commodity.

A member of the lobby steering committee Abdul Rahaman Wandati said the campaign aims at addressing the issues about sugar importation once and for all.

“We are soon going to launch a national campaign to urge Kenyans to stop buying and using sugar in their households,” he said.

He claimed that politicians have reduced farmers to beggars by improving and repackaging sugar in branded bags for reselling.

He alleged that they buy imported sugar at Sh44 per kilo and sell it to Kenyans at Sh220.

“They use the sugar to empty our pockets while at the same time killing local sugar industries. The best way to stop them is by boycotting sugar,” he said.

"Those who want to have sugar can use fruits, honey and jaggery."

President William Ruto on Wednesday announced that the government had ordered sugar imports to help stabilise the price of the commodity.

He said that the government had already issued important licences for the commodity from outside the Comesa market. He linked the shortage of sugar to the shortage of raw materials.

The Head of State said that the price of sugar will drop in the next two weeks.

The Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) also suspended the milling of sugar across the country for two months to allow maturity of cane.
