Boost as Bungoma sets aside Sh250m for scholarship fund

The scholarship initiative is set to assist students across all 45 wards in the county.

To achieve 100 percent educational transition, the Bungoma County Assembly has dedicated Sh250 million to the County Scholarship Fund, ensuring that 540 bright but financially challenged students receive support.

Governor Kenneth Lusaka praised the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) for their role in allocating funds to this bursary and scholarship program, while urging parents and guardians to actively participate in their children's education.

“Those who missed out on the scholarship program, we have set aside Sh180 million to support you,” Lusaka said.

The scholarship initiative is set to assist students across all 45 wards in the county.

Furthermore, an additional Sh180 million has been allocated for ward-level bursaries, further bolstering educational support in Bungoma.

In addition to that, Elimu Scholarship program was flagged off this week in Bungoma which saw over 3,000 applicants submitting their documents.

Bungoma County Director of Education Pius Ng’oma attributed the high numbers to the prevailing hard economy and high poverty index in the region.

The director applauded the parents and students for turning up in huge numbers to try their luck affirming that it is in line with the government’s plan to attain 100 % transition.

Ng’oma revealed that the Elimu Scholarship vetting team received 3,368 applicants saying that 985 were shortlisted adding that home visitations were done where 399 qualified for the scholarship funding.

The director said that 179 boys and 220 were girls.

“We were overwhelmed with the huge applications but at last those who qualified were picked for the scholarship funding,” he said, he appealed to other scholarship funders to consider the 400 who did not qualify for Elimu Scholarship.
