Tongaren MP John Chikati has launched a campaign to urge area residents to acquire national identity cards.
Chikati began the registration exercise in Tabani sub-location in a broader initiative to provide residents with access to crucial government services by facilitating the acquisition of ID cards.
The registration process will cover all the sub-locations in Tongaren Constituency over the next two months.
It specifically targets youths, adults who have never had IDs, and individuals who need replacements due to lost or damaged cards.
Addressing the residents at the launch event, Chikati emphasised the importance of acquiring ID cards.
“The ID card is a key document that opens doors to essential government services such as healthcare, education, employment, and voting rights. This exercise is about ensuring that no one in our constituency is left behind due to a lack of an identity card,” he said.
He added, "We are committed to reaching every corner of Tongaren Constituency, from Tabani to the furthest sub-locations, to ensure that every eligible person has access to this vital document. This initiative is in line with our government's efforts to empower our citizens and improve service delivery.”
For many residents in Tabani, the exercise represents an opportunity to gain access to services that have long been out of reach.
Martha Nafula, the mother of three, shared her excitement about the initiative.
“I have lived here for over 15 years, but I have never been able to get my ID card. It has been difficult to access government services. I couldn’t even open a bank account. I am so happy that this registration exercise is here, and I am looking forward to finally getting my ID.”
The registration team has been set up at the local community hall, where officials are processing applications, verifying documents, and guiding residents through the necessary steps.
Chikati encouraged all residents who have not yet registered to take full advantage of the exercise, assuring them that all the necessary steps would be taken to ensure their applications are processed quickly and efficiently.
“We understand that some people may have challenges or questions about the registration process and that is why we have mobilised a team of professionals to guide you and answer any questions you may have. We want this process to be as smooth as possible for everyone,” the MP said.
The MP also highlighted the broader impact the exercise will have on the constituency.
