The Sh10 million Kakamega fish market remains unoccupied a month after commissioning.

Traders who were to use the facility are still displaying their fish in the open.

“We are still out here yet the market is dormant. No one is telling us what’s happening. We ought to have occupied the market when it was commissioned but it was locked after the minister left,” said a fishmonger who declined to be named for fear of victimisation by the market management.

She said the facility was locked up after the commissioning ceremony, which was presided over by Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Hassan Joho in January.

The market at Masingo area in Kakamega town is supposed to be an aggregation hub for fish farmers, provide fish preservation services, streamline markets as well as promote healthy eating habits.

Acting Kakamega fisheries executive Mophat Mandela said plans were underway to operationalise the market.

“The department is engaging with a wide range of stakeholders to ensure the best suited model to manage the facility is agreed upon,” he said.

Mandela said the country is considering three models for management of the market
