THE Lake Victoria North Water Works Development Agency has secured Sh300 million funding from the African Development Bank to address persistent water shortage in parts of Busia and Bungoma counties.

Agency board chairman John Imoite said the funds will be used to implement projects that will offer a near permanent solution to water challenges in Mt Elgon and Teso North subcounties.

“After approaching various organisations, AfDB accepted our proposals and have agreed to fund the project to help address water challenges facing residents the two regions,” he said.

Imoite said Sh200m out of the amount will be used to restore supply in Mt Elgon by replacing water pipes that were damaged by people who illegally connected themselves to the supply to their farms to irrigate their crops.

He said Sh100m has been allocated to Teso region with Sh50 million meant for the last mile connectivity from the Malakisi-Malaba water project and construction of water kiosks to enable residents to access water at affordable cost.

The Malakisi water treatment plant was commissioned by President William Ruto last year.

Imoite said the balance of Sh50 million will be spent on improvement of the sewerage challenges in the border town of Malaba.

The chairman addressed mourners during the burial service for Anglican lay reader Ruth Kirori in Katelepai sublocation, Busia county, on Friday. Bungoma Kenya National Union of Teachers official Dennis Masai, Malaba Municipality board chairman Julius Ekwenye, Busia county secretary John Juma and Katakwa ACK Bishop John Okude attended the event.

Imoite said that the intervention through the AfDB funding will offer a short-term solution to the water and sewerage challenges facing residents of Teso North.

He said that the Trans-boundary Angololo Dam project between Kenya and Uganda will offer a permanent solution to water and sewerage challenges.

The project will be completed by September
