Junior Starlets remain optimistic about a semifinal slot in the ongoing FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup despite succumbing to a 2-0  opening loss to England on Thursday in the Dominican Republic.

The Kenyan beauties fell behind to Lola Sangita’s 29th-minute penalty to change their game plan as they had to chase the game early.

Starlets fought hard with Marion Serenge and Valerie Nekesa trying long-range shots to no avail as the English girls went into the breather tails up.

The second half wasn’t different as head coach Mildred Cheche brought in Susan Akoth for Lindey Atieno in the 57th minute, while Joan Ogola replaced Lorna Faith to bring more energy in the 84th minute.

However, it was England who extended their lead through Lauryn Thompson’s long-range effort.

Cheche expected a tough clash against the European side but says she is pleased with the girl’s fighting spirit.

“Our opponents played better, maybe because they have been at the stage before. We only conceded through a penalty and a long-range shot, meaning we weren’t that bad and we have to recover and get ready for our next game against the Republic of Korea, “ said Cheche.

This was the first time Starlets conceded in a competitive game, having qualified with a flawless record in four games, and was also their first competitive loss.

The Kenyan beauties won four friendly matches and drew one before the tournament, scoring an impressive 12 and conceding only four.

The defence was led by Police Bullets star captain Elizabeth Ochaka and Lorine Ilavonga.

Diana Anyango and Christine Adhiambo must shield goalkeeper Velma Abwire well, considering their next opponents Korea Republic hammered Mexico 4-1 in their opener to lead group C.

Starlets must at least grab a draw against the Korea Republic to remain in contention for the coveted semifinal slot ahead of their final group C clash against Mexico on Thursday at the Central Española Stadium in Santo Domingo.

Other African representative Nigeria cruised to a 4-1 victory over New Zealand, as Zambia narrowly fell 1-0 to Brazil in their opener.

Meanwhile, defending champions  Spain started their title defence with a 3-1 win over USA., as they seek to win their third consecutive title
