Contracted UHC staff hold protest, demand permanent and pensionable terms

Contracted UHC staff on Tuesday staged a protest at the Green Park bus terminus in Nairobi demanding better pay with permanent and pensionable terms.

The workers said they have been on contract for the last four years and are getting paid a quarter of the salary of their colleagues on permanent terms earn.

The protest was attended by UHC staff from Nairobi, Kisii and Machakos branches. 

The national government were set to add 2 more years to the contract and with this, the employees took to the streets of Nairobi to protest against the plan.

“We want the government to absolve us to permanent and pensionable terms,” A UHC staff member said

According to the UHC staff, some of their colleagues have committed suicide and are struggling with the high cost of living.

“Some of us have committed suicide, we are depressed, we have families to feed, we want to upgrade our careers,” he said.

Doreen, a contracted UHC staff stated her disappointment in the government saying she has now been employed for 3 years on contract with very little pay.
