Pumwani Maternity Hospital has registered 970 mothers since the rollout of the Social Health Authority (SHA) on October 1.

Speaking when she visited the facility on Wednesday, Health CS Deborah Barasa said this has increased access to essential maternity and neonatal care.

Barasa, who was accompanied by Health Director General Patrick Amoth, ministry and SHA officials as well as Nairobi County officials reviewed the ongoing implementation of SHA services at the facility.

“The hospital has made significant strides in integrating SHA services, enhancing patient access to vital healthcare,” Barasa said.

According to the CS, Community Health Promoters (CHPs) are actively working to boost enrollment and expand SHA’s reach to more mothers.

Barasa said with the continued rollout of SHA, Pumwani solidifies its leadership in maternity and neonatal services, advancing accessible healthcare for Nairobi’s mothers and children.

Medical Services PS Harry Kimtai noted that the government has seen a surge in daily registrations, with 91,000 Kenyans signing up in a single day.

The target is to have the entire population registered by December 2024.

The SHA, which replaces NHIF, allows Kenyans to access medical treatment at public, private, and faith-based healthcare facilities with uniform service costs across all sectors.

To further boost registration efforts, the government is enlisting community health promoters to assist at the grassroots level, especially for households that do not have access to mobile phones.

Registration can be done via the USSD code *147# or on the official SHA website.
