Officials from the Ministry of Health( MoH) on Friday afternoon kicked off the distribution of computers and tablets to health centres across the country.
In Nairobi, MoH Digital Agency officials led by Jeremiah Mugo handed over 11,780 computers and tablets to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital.
The distribution of the equipment is a result of the Intergovernmental Participatory Agreement with County Governments.
It aims to enhance efficiency in facilitating the rollout of Taifa Care and realisation of the Universal Health Coverage(UHC).
Doctor Jeremiah Mugo from the Digital Health Agency said the new system is aimed at replacing paper work with technology and will target all public and private facilities.
” This system helps us develop a patient’s portal which means we can have and store critical information so that even if one moves from one facility to the other, all that is needed is access to the portal by the medical personnel,” said Mugo.

Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital will serve as a storage centre for the equipment that will be shared among all the county health facilities in Nairobi.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at the facility Martin Wafula Wekesa said the equipment will help health workers attend to more patients.
” Now that there is more paperwork due to the fact that the tablet can tap and directly translate in written form- conversations between the Doctor and the patient,we can now attend to more patients.
The facility attends to at least 680 patients in a day and the number could go up according to Martin.
The CEO also emphasised the importance of creating a patient portal that can be accessed by any Doctor across the country.
” This is important because once you have documented the history of the patient then it becomes easy for us and takes off the burden of too much and unnecessary explanations from the patients,” he said.
The MoH is expected to distribute 74,000 computers and tablets to every worker in all the 47 counties and national referral facilities.
All health care workers will be trained on digitisation with 325 Smart Primary Care Networks set to be established.
This will also help the Ministry to build and maintain an electronic health insurance claims platform for all public facilities.
