President Uhuru Kenyatta officially opened the new ultra-modern Kisumu Railway Station located on Busia Road next to Kisumu Cotton Mills (KICOMI) on Monday.
During the launch, the head of state expressed optimism that rail transport will boost Kisumu’s status as an economic hub in the Western Kenya region.
He noted that restoration of rail transport in Kisumu will not only lower the cost of ferrying goods along the line but also stimulate growth of industries that will create jobs for the youth.

“Because of this rail line, the cost of travelling from Mombasa to Kisumu will reduce. Also the cost of transporting goods from Mombasa to Kisumu will reduce and that is of benefit to the people,” Uhuru said.
The President is on a two-day working visit of the county, which will also mark his last official tour to Kisumu as head of state.
Uhuru, addressed a section of the lakeside city residents, saying that the country could not have made significant progress in infrastructure development and other sectors of the economy without peace.
