The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Sunday began deploying ballot materials for the gubernatorial election scheduled for Monday.

The commission also deployed electoral officials to all the 1,047 polling stations within Mombasa County.

On August 9, IEBC postponed the Mombasa gubernatorial election for Mombasa and Kakamega following errors on the ballot papers.

The election was rescheduled for August 23, but IEBC chair Wafula Chebukati moved the date further citing harassment and intimidation of his officials.

On Saturday, Mombasa County IEBC Returning Officer Swalha Yusuf said they are ready for the governor election, which has attracted seven candidates.

Abdulswamad Nassir of ODM and Hassan Omar of UDA are the front-runners in the race.

On Sunday, a spot check by the Star in parts of Mombasa showed IEBC officials in the last-minute rush to beat the deadline ahead of Monday’s election.

Police have also been deployed to ensure peaceful polls.
