Nairobi residents on Wednesday took to the streets for a day of action called by the opposition ( Azimio la Umoja Coalition)  despite a ban on the demonstrations.

They protested the country's cost of living crisis and the Finance Act, 2023 

Opposition leader Raila Odinga, who narrowly lost last year's presidential election to William Ruto, has vowed that the rallies will go ahead.

Some sections in Nairobi turned into a battlefield as police engaged in running battles.

In the morning hours before 10 am, the streets in Nairobi were empty as business premises remained closed, Public transport vehicles were lacking commuters.

However, from midday Mathare and Kibra  areas were turned into a battlefield as protestors dared police in the demos.

Raila Odinga-led Azimio la Umoja coalition said the anti-government demonstrations will go on for three days this week.

In a statement, Azimio la Umoja said due to requests from all sectors, the peaceful protests will be held on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. 

"We will have countrywide protests this week on Wednesday whether the government likes it or not," he said.

He vowed not to bow out of protests until President  Ruto addresses the real issues.

The  Opposition chief said that it was not over until the real issues affecting Kenyans are addressed.

Raila said the protests will continue until Ruto looks into the contested Finance Act, of 2023.

"There is no moving on until Ruto comes out and openly repeals the Finance Act, 2023 and issues other measures to lower cost of living," he said.

However, President William Ruto said he will use all means to stop the protests.

"Raila Odinga, I won't allow you to seek power on the back of the blood of Kenyans. I will stop you," he said.
