ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo on Thursday led the government's relief food distribution to victims displaced by floods in Kisumu and Siaya counties.
Kenya Kwanza government has been distributing relief food and nonfood items in response to the adverse effects of the El Nino rains and flooding that have ravaged parts of the country causing displacement and destroying livelihoods.
Official government statistics as of Wednesday indicated that 165 people had died as a result of floods.
Owalo presided over the food distribution exercise in the Ombaka area of Nyando Constituency and Kagwa in Uyoma, Rarieda Constituency.
"Whereas relief food distribution is an emergency measure to cushion vulnerable citizens, the government is working on long-term sustainable measures to control the menace of flooding," Owalo said.
He was accompanied by a number of leaders including Nyanza Regional Commissioner, Flora Mwora.
Other present were SASRA chairman Jack Ranguma, KIMC chairman, Charles Owino, Posta chairperson Rose Nyamunga and a host of present and former elected leaders in the region.
