Police were forced to lob tear gas canisters at youth in Nairobi's downtown area.

They were regrouping ahead of the planned protests.

A spot check by the Star showed that most shops in the CBD remained closed.

Police have also mounted roadblocks along major roads such as City Hall Way and Parliament Road.
