In Summary

Rigathi Gachagua is on the verge of becoming the sixth shortest serving deputy president should the Senate on Thursday next week vote to uphold his impeachment.

Should he be impeached, Gachagua will become the first-ever second-in-command in Kenya’s history to be forcefully removed from office through a vote of no confidence.

Others before him resigned save for Kijana Wamalwa who died in office in 2003 and Musalia Mudavadi – the current Prime Cabinet Secretary – whose term came to an end after former President Daniel Moi left office and Wamalwa became VP under Mwai Kibaki.

Gachagua will have served two years and 25 days in office if he gets impeached.

Other shortest serving VPs were Joseph Murumbi, Josephat Karanja and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
