AT least 56 per cent of Kenyans live in slums, despite the elapse of the Millennium Development Goals deadline, the UN Habitat has said.

In a report released yesterday in Nairobi, the UN agency said despite slight achievements made in the last one and a half decades, many Kenyans still live in slums, with no access to basic amenities.

The rate of children dying before their fifth birthday has declined by more than half, dropping from 90 to 43 deaths per 1,000 live births since 1990, says the report.

The report says Kenya’s mortality rate stands at 73 deaths out of 1,000 children below the age of five.

Figures for maternal mortality ratio show a decline of 45 per cent worldwide, with most of the reduction occurring since 2000.

In Kenya, 409 mothers in every 100,000 die during childbirth.
