Several houses have been torched in interclan clashes after a Marakwet East woman was killed on Sunday evening.

Fighting erupted at 6am on Monday morning when Talaa Lomuket, 62, was found dead. The Kowow clan launched a retaliatory attack against units in Maron sub-location.

Residents exchanged gunfire. Yesterday, deputy county commissioner Eric Mulevu said the attackers suspected to be from Kowow clan opened fire on police officers deployed to restore calm. He said police officers engaged the attackers for at least four hours.

“We have not yet established the number of houses destroyed, but they are many,” Mulevu said. He said members of the Kowow clan suspect Lomuket was murdered and her body dumped.

Mulevu criticised the Marakwet culture of destroying property to revenge suspected murderers. He said the cause of death is yet to be established, adding that the body has been taken to Kapsowar Mission Hospital for an autopsy.
