Three killed, 389 displaced in Homa Bay floods

They died raging River Kuja swept them away in Ndhiwa constituency

Three people two of them children have died and 389 others displaced in Homa Bay as floods continue to wreak havoc in the county. 

 

The two children were aged 12 and 14 while the man was 34 years old. 

They died after raging floods of River Kuja swept them away in Ndhiwa constituency. 

Homa Bay county commissioner Harman Shambi said the man is the latest victim of floods. His body was found floating on Sunday.

The administrator said the man is suspected to have drowned in the flooded water and his body washed downstream. 

“A resident saw the body floating on water and alerted colleagues who retrieved it,” Shambi said. 

 

The two children drowned on Wednesday and Friday last week when they tried crossing the same river.

 One child was in a boat together with other occupants when their vessels capsized in the middle of the river. 

In Karachuonyo constituency, flooded River Miriu has continued to cause damage to homes of residents of Wang' Chieng ward.

The river which busts its banks two weeks ago has continued to spread water to Kobala and Kobuya. 

Floods in the area have affected more than 64 households. 

Shambi led other government officials in distributing relief food to the affected families on Monday. 

“The government has released rice, mattresses, formula for children and kitchen equipment to assist the affected families,” the commissioner said.

He said his office is collaborating with other agencies to ensure the families are well taken care of.

“We will have a meeting with the county government to discuss ways of helping the families who are camping in the school,” he said.
