Some individuals are out to sabotage garbage collection in Kiambu county. This is according to Deputy Governor James Nyoro.

He said garbage trucks have been vandalised to undermine services and create the impression that the county government has failed in its work.

Nyoro spoke at the county government headquarters in Kiambu town on Thursday. He said some people were sent to destroy the trucks to make it difficult to collect waste in major towns. He did not name names.

“We have been having issues with garbage collection. I had been very quiet but I said I would get to a point where I would talk. By the time we went for December holidays, 21 garbage trucks had been intentionally vandalised and broken down,” he said.

Nyoro has been in charge of county affairs after Governor Ferdinand Waititu was charged with corruption and barred from accessing his office. He alleged a plot to have all vehicles grounded during the holiday so garbage would pile up.

“I have been able to repair 10 trucks and I hear there are others breaking down in unclear circumstances. Why are they breaking down this time? If you have been sent to disturb us and show that we are not doing any work, you will stay aside,” he said.

Nyoro said Thika subcounty has a landfill which has not been utilised and has been funded for two years by the Japanese government.

“I visited Kangoki landfill which has been funded by Japan government for two years and nobody has been using it. The Japanese are wondering why the landfill is not being utilised, but by February, it will be operational and we will streamline the garbage collection,” he said.

Nyoro warned health officers that the county government has no space to politicise the health system. “If someone is caught with corruption or hampering service delivery so that we may seem that we are not working, do not say you are being targeted because of your background. We do not want to politicise the changes we are doing in the health system."

His remarks came after nurses threatened to go on strike in a week’s time over alleged harassment of a senior health docket colleague. The Kenya National Union of Nurses demanded a probe into the conduct of the Health executive and the chief officer.

Nyoro said any union in the health sector is free to visit his office to know the vision the county government has for the sector.

“My office is always open to anybody who would want to talk to us... Just come and we will tell you our vision 2050, not this vision of tomorrow, and you will see how you fit in the vision."

The county government seeks to ensure all hospitals have adequate medicines and has restructured and started building a county store where drugs will be stored to avoid queuing at Kemsa. Nyoro said anyone trying to block the needs of the people will be sacked.
