The ongoing rains have paralysed rail transport on the Nairobi-Nakuru line after several sections were swept away.

Downpours pounded the Mai Mahiu area of Naivasha on Tuesday and Wednesday night, leaving a trail of destruction and flooding in Kijabe and View Point areas.

Several structures were destroyed, including a children’s home, and more than 10 families were displaced.

In view of the situation, Kenya Railways suspended transport along the route as engineers moved in to assess the damage. A senior manager from the corporation said the Kijabe section was the most affected as underground soil was washed away.

The officer said on condition of anonymity that it will take several weeks to repair the sections because of the ongoing rains.

“At the moment, we've been forced to suspend services along this route until we repair all the affected sections,” he said.

"We fear that more sections could be washed away, thus adversely affecting rail operations in the country, but we are keenly monitoring the situation."

Naivasha subcounty commissioner Mathioya Mbogo said several feeder roads and bridges were also damaged. He said the destruction across the region has been massive and families living around Lake Naivasha are the worst hit.

"We've advised families living near seasonal rivers and dams in the Kijabe area to relocate as the rains get heavier by the day."

A section of the Moi South Lake Road, which leads to flower farms in Naivasha, was also destroyed last week. Repair works are underway.
