Ongoing Construction of Othaya Town Roads in Nyeri County

The new facelift roads in Othaya town, Nyeri County will be completed in October 2022, the Kenya Urban Roads Authority has said.

Currently, the Sh454 million projects contracted by Gragab Agencies Limited is 15 per cent complete.

This is in a bid to ease access within the town and improve connectivity.

“There was a great need to construct the roads in Othaya due to the bad state of roads in the town, this hindered efficient transportation of dairy products and farm produce especially during the rainy season,” Kura’s communication officer Stephen Njogu said.

He said with the completion of the roads within the town, farmers will have an easy time delivering produce to the market and residents will use the shorter time when moving from one point to the other.

The project commenced in September is fully funded by the government and Kura is the implementing agency.

Njogu said that the project has enabled to employ at least 40 local youths who are contracted on a daily basis to provide skilled and unskilled labour hence improving lives.

However, contractors are experiencing a challenge in encroachment on the road reserve but the process of relocating the services and clearing the corridor is ongoing swiftly.

The state corporation is also set to improve the town bus terminus and Jua Kali business sheds by installing cabros and providing better access hence enabling efficient transport and improving business within the town.

During the launch in September, Othaya MP Gichuki Mugambi said the operationalisation of the Othaya Level 6 Hospital has brought many people into the town and therefore the need for expanding roads network in the area and the town itself.

The arrival of more people, he said, has raised the demand for housing in the town and the need for good infrastructure.

The hospital will have employed 1,300 by the time it is fully operational.
