Heavy rains to reduce today and Saturday - Met

Heavy rainfall which has been witnessed in parts of Kenya is likely to reduce its intensities from today and Saturday.

The meteorological department said the reduced intensities will be witnessed in Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Central Rift Valley, the Northwest, the South-eastern Lowlands, the Northeast & the Highlands East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi County.

"Due to already high-water levels in some rivers and other water retention areas, it is likely that the rains may cause flooding over flood plains and other areas not well drained," the Met department said.

Mudslides and landslides are also likely to occur on hilly areas of the Highlands West of the Rift Valley and the Highlands East of the Rift Valley.

"...this is due to already saturated soils. Remember to check safety precautions when parking your car. Stay safe." the department added.

People and animals have also been swept away by floods while crossing Mutuine River in Kibra, Nairobi following heavy rains in the area on Thursday night.

According to Met, April was the peak month of the long rains season and many parts of the country experienced near to below average rainfall.

The long rains season is expected to come to an end during the month of May in many parts of the country except for the Coastal region and Western Kenya.

According to the Director of Meteorological Services Stella Aura, the outlook for May 2021 indicates that several parts of the Lake Victoria Basin region and Western Kenya; Central and Southern Rift Valley are likely to experience slightly enhanced rainfall.
