Three people have died in a grisly accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway near Salama town in Makueni county.

Makueni county police commander Joseph Ole Napeiyan said the accident occurred at around 7.30am on Saturday.

He said the victims died on the spot. The crash happened at Tangu area in Mukaa subcounty. The bodies were taken to Salama Hospital Mortuary.

“The accident involved a Nissan X- trail that was heading to Nairobi from Mombasa. The driver of the said vehicle was overtaking a fleet of vehicles when he collided head on with a trailer. All passengers in the car died on the spot,” Napeiyan said.

The driver of the trailer escaped after the incident.

Napeiyan urged motorists to be cautious and avoid flouting traffic regulations, especially on busy highways.

On Wednesday, four people died in a similar accident on the same road in Athi River, Machakos county.

The four also died on the spot after a matatu they were travelling in rammed into a stationary trailer at Total in Sabaki area. Both drivers escaped unhurt.

Police blamed the two drivers for the crash saying it was out of their negligence.

Athi River subcounty police boss Anderson Njagi said the matatu driver was speeding while the trucker did not put lifesaver reflectors to warn that the lorry had stalled.

Another nine people were rushed to Shalom Community Hospital in Athi River with injuries. Bodies were moved to the hospital's mortuary.
