Strong winds, rains expected in several parts of Kenya

• The June, July and August forecast shows most areas in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi County are expected to experience cool and cloudy conditions with occasional drizzle or light rains.

• Occasional afternoon/night showers are likely, and there will be prolonged hours of overcast skies (cloudy conditions) are expected to cause cold and chilly conditions on some days. 

The strong winds may blow off roofs, uproot trees and cause structural damages.

Strong southerly to south-easterly winds with speeds exceeding 25 knots are expected over some parts of the Coast, the Northeast, the Northwest and the South-eastern lowlands.

Counties likely to be affected are Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, Turkana, West Pokot, Samburu, Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta.

The Kenya Meteorological Department said rainfall is expected over few to several areas in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the South and Central Rift Valley, the Northwest and the Highlands East of the Rift Valley.

“There will be isolated storms over some parts of the Highlands West of the Rift Valley and Northwest. These include Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Turkana, West Pokot and Samburu Counties. The Northeast, the Coast and the South-eastern Lowlands are likely to be generally dry,” Met said.

The five-day weather forecast showed that cold and cloudy conditions, accompanied by occasional light rains, are expected over Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi counties.

Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, Transnzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet and Nandi counties will also experience cold and cloudy conditions accompanied by occasional light rains.

The outlook for June-July and Augusts rainfall season indicated that the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, Central and Southern Rift Valley as well as the Northwestern region are likely to receive slightly above-average rainfall.

The Coastal strip is likely to receive below-average rainfall, while the rest of the country is expected to remain generally dry.
