Jimmy Kibaki is the deputy party leader of The New Democrats party.

The event, in which he was named deputy party leader, was held on Friday at Serena hotel.

Speaking to the Star on Saturday, party national chairman Thuo Mathenge said Jimmy will play a key role in the 2022 election.

He also revealed that President Uhuru Kenyatta’s cousin Simon Gathecha has joined the party. He did not reveal the position Gathecha will be holding.

“Jimmy and Gathecha are now members of TND party. Jimmy will be deputy party leader,” Thuo said.

He said TND is aiming to win between 50 and 150 parliamentary seats in the 2022 election to give it more bargaining power during the formation of coalitions after next year's polls. The party has one MP and 17 MCAs.

“We want to win as many seats as possible because we want to form a coalition government with other parties. This is because the government will be formed by a coalition of parties, not a single party,” he said.

He said in the next two weeks, they will make the list of officials public.

Thuo called on Uhuru to hold talks with leaders from the Mt Kenya region to cool the rising political temperatures.

“We are in talks with key political figures across the country to join our party ahead of the 2022 elections. TND will be the party to watch, especially within the Mt Kenya region," he said.
