Somber mood engulfed Ebwali village, Luanda sub-county in Vihiga County as the family whose relatives perished in a fiery crash at Kaburengu in Bungoma county laid to rest this afternoon.
The victims were identified as Richard Osimbo, 76; his wife Rebecca Osimbo, 71; Martin Olenja, 33; and in-laws Rosabella Kefa, 60, John Nyabaka, 71; and their friend and driver Vincent Osiema, 37.
Osiema was laid to rest at his home Madira.
Among the leaders who attended the burial include Vihiga governors Wilber Ottichilo of Vihiga, Wycliffe Oparanya of Kakamega, and Senator George Khaniri, MP Justus Kizito, Godfrey Osotsi, and Vihiga Woman Representative Beatrice Adagala.
The leaders have demanded a proper check of Eldoret-Turbo –Kaburengu, and Webuye Highway to end the perennial greasy accidents.
“Kaburengu junction and the bridge are notorious for fatal accidents that have occurred over the years,” Ottichilo said.
Ottichilo further said, In December 2018, 16 people were killed at Kaburengu after a tanker rammed a matatu at the junction.
“It is almost exactly one year after another accident claimed seven lives on August 24, 2020, at Kaburengu,” he added.
Kakamega governor said he will lead a special prayer on the scene to tame off the perennial accidents.
“I have done all in my capacity I was told to set a flood must light is there I set up even a market pumps but nothing yet to solve this,” Oparanya said.
The family had hired a private vehicle to travel to Shikendu in Bungoma County for a dowry.
A lorry struck their car, colliding with an oncoming trailer before bursting into flames. It landed in River Nzoia.
All occupants of the car perished in the crash on Saturday last week.
The bodies were burnt beyond recognition and DNA testing is necessary to establish identities.
The badly burnt bodies were taken to Webuye County Hospital mortuary in Bungoma County before being taken to Vihiga county referral for the DNA test.
Lawmakers present said they will push for a motion that will lead for national government to redesign the road to reduce the number of road accidents.
