Police in Garbatulla, Isiolo county Friday morning arrested two suspects found in possession of four riffles with 203 bullets.
The two, 35-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman were arrested during an operation in Kina town after a tip-off from members of the public.
Also recovered were six stones of bhang and two numberless motorcycles, suspected to be getaway means used by the suspects.
The two are being grilled by detectives pending their arraignment.
Police said they suspect they were part of a larger gang operating in the area and smuggling weapons.
These weapons are used to attack clans in ongoing inter-clan fighting in Isiolo and Marsabit.
More than a dozen people have been killed and others displaced in the clashes that become rampant near and during elections time.
DCI George Kinoti said they are interrogating the two to establish if there are more suspects in the ring.
“Such weapons can be used for terror purposes or killing innocent people. We are digging further to know if there were other players,” he said.
Tension has been building in the area with more local militia amassing weapons for planned attacks for political reasons.
Last month, during an operation in Nairobi, police seized more than 2,000 bullets used for AK47 rifles that were destined for Isiolo.
A senior officer stationed at the General Service Unit Training college in Embakasi was arrested and is facing charges in court.
At least five other GSU officers linked to the supply of the bullets from government stores are either missing or dead.
Two others were killed in unclear circumstances along Mombasa Road and Utawala area.
Police have denied involvement.
Some of the bullets that had been recovered in the ongoing operation in Laikipia were traced to government stores raising an alarm of a serious ring in the police that is compromising security hence investigations and said action.
In Laikipia, more than ten people have been killed in the attacks mostly from armed herders.
The government has resettled those who were displaced by the clashes.
