Wanted Lamu Senator surrenders to police over shooting of woman in Nanyuki

Police say senator Anuar is likely to face among others, charges misusing his gun.

Lamu senator, Anuar Loitiptip surrendered to the police on Sunday over an alleged shooting incident in Nanyuki that left a woman nursing gun shot wounds. 

The senator will spend the night in custody in Nanyuki ahead of his arraignment Monday.

Police said he is likely to face among others, charges of misusing his gun and causing bodily harm on the woman.

His gun was confiscated when he surrendered Sunday afternoon and would undergo forensic analysis as part of the probe.

Police spokesman Bruno Shioso confirmed the surrender and arrest of the Senator.

“Lamu senator surrendered to Nanyuki police following an earlier incident where his lady friend was shot and injured and is currently assisting police with investigations,” he said.

Anuar is said to have told police he was attacked at a joint prompting the shooting. He then vanished after injuring 32-year-old Joy Makena on Saturday night.

She was rushed to to hospital in Nanyuki with gunshot injuries on her right foot, above the ankle and was in stable condition. Makena told police she was shot by Anuar of Jubilee party. She said a quarrel broke out between her and the first time senator before he shot her at close range.

He then fled the scene leaving behind his bodyguard and other supporters to attend to her.Anuar is said to have called a senior officer at about 6 am asking for a contact for the Laikipia head of Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

Witnesses said the incident happened at about 2 am as a group met at the open field. Police later traced his bodyguard and disarmed him of his Ceska pistol that had 13 bullets. Two spent cartridges were recovered from the scene.

Both the weapon and the bullet heads were sent for ballistic analysis.Police visited the woman in hospital yesterday for further statement as they investigate the incident.

The officers said they had not established the motive of the shooting and they intend to record more statements from more witnesses over the incident. Anuar is not new to drama in his lifetime as a first time senator.

In 2019, he and former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s daughter were injured following an attack by unknown people in Kasarani, Nairobi.

The incident happened as Anuar who had been with Agnes Saumu Mbuvi were attacked by unknown men while leaving the club. The senator sustained deep cuts in the head and was taken to the Aga Khan Hospital, where he was treated and discharged.

Saumu told police she had been with the senator at the club watching the UEFA Champions League finals, and had excused herself to visit the washrooms when trouble began.

She said at the washrooms, she was confronted by a man who tore her blouse in the ensuing scuffle.

Later, the Senator’s handlers released photos of him lying in hospital before and after he was treated.

He has also been in social scenes commenting on various issues.
