At least 22 public universities have fully implemented the 2017-2021 CBA agreement, a UASU official has revealed.

Another eight institutions have not implemented the CBA, prompting the recent spike in staff and lecturers strikes.

UASU organising secretary Onesmus Mutio criticised the eight universities and asked them to do their due diligence.

Mutio said if they will not pay their staff then they should be ready for more strikes.

“Even if you decide to reopen the school as Moi University has done without consulting UASU stakeholders, then your staff will continue striking,” Mutio said during an interview with a local radio station.

Universities that have failed to implement the CBA include Moi University, Rongo University, Technical University of Kenya, and Egerton University.

Others are Kisii University, Embu University, Taita Taveta, and Murang'a University.

Mutio noted that six other institutions had talks with their members and promised to fulfill the agreement.

They include JKUAT, South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU), Kirinyaga University, Cooperative University, and Dedan Kimathi University.

“Taita Taveta agreed to pay after their staff went on strike last week, the University of Nairobi paid their staff recently, and that’s what we want to see across all others,” he said.

The government released Sh2.2 billion capitation in July for lecturers to receive enhanced salaries.

Earlier this year, the National Assembly approved Sh6 billion for the first implementation of the 2017-18, 2018-19, and 2019-20 agreement, while the remaining amount Sh2.2 billion was to be cleared for 2020-21.

In the 2017-21 CBA, the lowest paid academic staff (graduate assistants and research assistants) earn Sh57,729 while the highest-paid academic staff are professors, who earn Sh283,087.
