Driver avoids knocking dog only to kill woman in Machakos accident

The car swerved off the road to avoid hitting a wandering dog.

A woman has died after she was knocked down by a private car along Machakos – Wote road in Machakos County.

The woman in her mid-30’s died on the spot following the incident that occurred near Katuaa shopping centre at Kola location within Machakos Sub County on Friday.

According to a police report seen by the Star, the car swerved off the road to avoid hitting a wandering dog that was crossing the road.

"Unfortunately, the driver instead hit the woman who was walking on the pedestrian lane," the re police said.

The matter was reported at Machakos police station. The body was taken to Machakos Level Five Hospital mortuary awaiting a postmortem.

Police said the car’s occupants including its driver sustained minor injuries during the incident.

The wreckage was towed to Machakos police station awaiting inspection.

Police have since launched investigations into the incident.

The incident happened a few weeks after National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) cautioned motorists’ against speeding.

More than 3,500 lives were lost on the roads nationally between January and November.

NTSA data shows that majority of those who engage in accidents don’t hold driving licenses.
