The Orange Democratic Movement party has postponed party primaries for Nakuru County.

In a communique to all aspirants late Thursday night, NEB Chairperson Catherine Mumma said the party had called off the primaries that were scheduled to take place today April 1.

This according to her was to safeguard lives of members and officials.

"This is to inform you that we have had to call off the party primary nominations for Nakuru and referred the matter to the central committee," she said.

Mumma cited a scenario where Presiding officers and clerks received security threats from a section of individuals.

"We had to wait until our team had been escorted to safety before sharing this message."

A decision on the representation of the Kaptembwa, Olkaria, Kivumbini and Shabaab wards will made later and communicated to the Aspirants.

Mumma accused branch Chairman Bernard Miruka of attacking the ODM NEB officials on the ground.

"I got to hear of this and I called Miruka who informed me categorically that no elections would be carried out in nakuru unless we let the officials in nakuru to pick the clerks and POs," she said.

The party was set to begin its nomination exercise on Friday with Nakuru County.

In an updated timetable given on Wednesday, the nominations would run from April 1 to April 21.

The ODM party has in the last few days been forced to clarify the issue of giving direct nominations.

It has also been accused of returning nomination fees to some aspirants who had expressed interest in various seats.

Speaking in Kibra on Wednesday, ODM Secretary general Edwin Sifuna refuted reports that some Nairobi aspirants had been handed nomination certificates.

He revealed that the plan was to have the party’s Nairobi nomination tickets issued at once to all aspirants.

"Nairobi nomination tickets have not been issued. Even me as Sifuna I don’t have mine but they will come together for all aspirants in Nairobi," he said.

Explaining further, Sifuna stated that the party only issued nomination tickets to members of parliament who recently defected from other parties in western region, citing Kakamega.

The priority that was being given were the MPs who defected from other parties like those in Kakamega. They had to be considered first but for Nairobi no one has been given a direct ticket."
