Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko pours water on his mother Saumu Mbuvi's grave at the Kikowani Cemetery on Friday.

Lamu elders have summoned a man who claimed that Mombasa Governor aspirant Mike Sonko had allegedly visited the wrong grave in his attempt to pray at his late mother's burial site.

Alawy Badawy, a Lamu native and community leader, said Abubakar Aboud’s statement had angered elders in Lamu.

He said Aboud’s mother is still alive and lives in Lamu.

“Action will be taken against him. They have called his family and he has been warned,” said Badway during a phone interview with the Star.

He said the Lamu elders want Aboud to issue a corrective statement and explain why he made the statement.

“His mother lives in Lamu. We can take the journalists to her right now,” said Badawy.

The Lamu elders also asked Sonko to make a visit to the archipelago so they can give him their blessings.

Aboud, who hails from Lamu County, on Saturday accused Sonko of using his (Aboud’s) mother’s grave for political mileage.

“This is my mother, Mariam Ali’s grave. She was buried here seven years ago,” said Aboud.

“Let Sonko look for his mother’s grave. It is not this one,” said a tearful Aboud.

When contacted, Aboud denied he is the one who issued the statement.

“You must have the wrong number,” he said, before switching off his phone.

On Friday, Sonko visited his mother Saumu Mukami Mbuvi’s grave at the Kikowani Muslim Cemetery in the company of Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and his running mate Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo.

Sonko said his mother was laid to rest there in 1997.

The visit was politically meant to send a statement that Sonko is a bonafide Mombasa resident and not an outsider as had been claimed by his opponents.

Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, who has since thrown his weight behind Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir had on May 2 said Mombasa cannot be led by outsiders.

Sonko’s supporters, including former Nominated Senator Emma Mbura, however, said since his mother Saumu was from the Digo community, the flamboyant politician, who was born in Majengo in Mombasa, automatically becomes a Mombasa native.
