He just wanted to watch the UEFA Champions League finals.
Instead, he died on Sunday morning after he was allegedly assaulted by private security guards at a popular nightclub in Kilifi town.
Feisal Bushuti, 30, arrived at Lexo Lounge around midnight to watch the UEFA Champions League finals between Liverpool and Real Madrid.
He was denied access by bouncers.
David Mwanzele, an uncle of the victim, said Bushuti paid the entrance fee to watch the match but the cashier refused to give him his change.
“We had attended the burial of a neighbour, then we went to watch the match but the cashier took Bushuti’s money and said she will keep the change," he said.
"When he demanded his change, the bouncers pounced on him and started beating him up. They rained blows and kicks on him before releasing him and he rolled down the staircase to the ground floor,” he said.
Mwanzele said on reaching the ground, he was already unconscious.
“We put him on a motorbike and rushed him to the Kilifi County Referral Hospital but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
"I am sure he died right at the club because when we picked him from the ground he was not responding,” Mwanzele said.
Kilifi North police commander Jonathan Koech said already a manager and security guard have been held to help with investigations.
“We got information from the public about the incident and we rushed to the scene. The Mombasa-Malindi highway had been barricaded.
"Angry youths had burned tyres and we calmed the situation. The body was taken to the Kilifi county mortuary and post-mortem will be done Sunday,” he said
Koech said the public have complained a number of times about noise at the club and they had to intervene.
After the death, the public destroyed property at the club.
Anne Uchi, a cousin of Bushuti, urged the government to ensure the family gets justice.
Uchi said Bushuti was the pillar of the family.
She said the deceased had no visible physical injuries.
Bushuti is the second born. The firstborn is sick and their mother is in Saudi Arabia working to feed the family. His death is a blow to the family. We suspect he suffered internal injuries,” she said
Bushuti who worked as a cook at events is survived by a wife and two children aged four and two.
Well-known lawyer and politician George Kithi who visited the family said he will make sure the family gets justice.
Kithi faulted the club for using excessive force.
“It is wrong to manhandle a man who was not armed. They should have arrested him and called the police. Why was it easy for them to call the police when there was chaos but could not call the police to arrest the man?
"I will pick this case myself once I get the autopsy report,” he said
The club is less than 500 metres from the Kilifi governor’s official residence.
At one point the club was closed down after the governor complained about noise from the venue.
“It is not enough for the governor to complain. We need action taken against the club. I witnessed county reinforcement officers clash with security of the club trying to close it down,” Kithi said.
