Two al Shabaab militants were Monday killed in a US airstrike at a remote location near Libikus in Somalia.
In a statement on Tuesday, the US Africa Command said the strike executed in coordination with Somali forces followed Sunday's al Shabaab attack on US partner forces in the area.
"The command's initial assessment is that two al Shabaab terrorists were killed in action and that no civilians were injured or killed given the remote nature of where this engagement occurred."
US forces are authorised to conduct strikes in defence of designated partner forces, the Command noted.
The Command said it takes great measures to prevent civilian casualties during such strikes.
Al Shabaab insurgents have been conducting indiscriminate attacks against US allies in Somalia and in neighbouring countries like Kenya who have taken up arms against the group and its activities.
The attacks orchestrated by the extremists group often result in mass casualties and life threatening injuries.
The presence of the group in Somalia poses a threat not only to Somalia but its neighbours, the US and regional interests.
"The Federal government of Somalia and the US remain committed to fighting al Shabaab to prevent the deaths of innocent civilians," the US Africa Command said.
