A man who confessed to defiling a two-year-old girl in a church during service has been sentenced to 45 years in prison by a Nairobi court.
Erastus Kariuki confessed that he indeed defiled the child claiming it was an evil spirit that entered his body which made him commit the crime.
He confessed that on July 3 this year at 3 pm in Zimmerman in Kasarani, he unlawfully and intentional raped a minor aged 2 years and 11 months.
After considering the victim's impact report produced in court, Milimani Senior principal magistrate Wandia Nyamu sentenced him to 45 years behind bars.
Kariuki had told the court that he was bewitched and that’s the reason he decided to defile the minor.
According to the prosecution, Kariuki entered the church compound at Zimmerman and after giving his offering he went and grabbed the young girl and defiled her.
The court further heard that after a few minutes the young girl’s mother heard her daughter scream and when she ran out to check she found Kariuki holding her daughter on his lap.
She realized that he was raping the child and grabbed her child from him then ran towards the church to alert members who had already run out to check.
The members were able to apprehend him and he was beaten up by the public who were angered by his actions.
He got lucky from being lunched after some members of the church rescued him from the mob and took him to Kasarani police station.
The child was rushed to a city hospital where she is admitted for correctional surgery.
