Anne Waiguru re-elected governor of Kirinyaga County

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has successfully defended her seat.

Waiguru was declared winner of the hotly contested race between her and Woman representative Purity Ngirici after garnering 113,088 votes.

"From the foregoing I therefore declare Anne Mumbi Waiguru the Governor-elect of Kirinyaga County," the County Returning officer announced.

Ngirici who vied as an independent candidate had 105,677.

Waiguru was first elected governor in 2017 on a Jubilee party ticket.

The Kirinyaga gubernatorial race was marred with claims of rigging which resulted to recounts in some areas.

Violence and intimidation was also reported during the counting of votes.

Ngirici has accused IEBC officials of planning to alter the outcome of the gubernatorial results.

Ngirici said returning officer Geoffrey Gitobu allegedly colluded with her political rival Ann Waiguru to alter the outcome of the final tally.

Waiguru told off her opponent saying that intimidation and violence will not change the results.

Speaking to the media, Waiguru insisted that Kenya is a democratic country and that the will of the people should be respected.

"It is very unfortunate that as candidates we can resort to intimidation and violence because that doesn't change anything," she said on Thursday.
