Uhuru commits to peaceful transition after meeting US senator

President Uhuru Kenyatta has asked Kenyans to maintain peace as the country is in the transition period.

In a statement after meeting the US visiting Senator Chris Coons, Uhuru said Kenya will remain steadfast in entrenching the principles of good governance.

The president said he is committed to ensuring that Kenya upholds its position as a shining example of democracy on the continent.

“My greatest desire is that peace will prevail and we may set an example in the continent and the world,” President Kenyatta said.

Uhuru on  Thursday met and held discussions with Senator Coons who paid him a courtesy call at State House Nairobi.

Senator Coons, who is leading a congressional delegation of US Senate and House Representatives, commended President Kenyatta for ensuring peace and stability prevailed during the election period.

“We are encouraged by the peace Kenya has continued to experience during this period,” said Senator Coons.

Also present during the talks were Cabinet Secretaries Raychelle Omamo (Foreign Affairs) Betty Maina (Trade) and US Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman among others.

Earlier, Senator Coons held talks with president-elect William Ruto at his official Karen residence.

The talks touched on the just concluded elections in the country and the mutual relationship between Kenya and United States.

He also met Azimio Presidential candidate Raila Odinga and Deputy President candidate Martha Karua.

They  discussed shared democratic values.
