The Mombasa ODM gubernatorial candidate Abdulswamad Nassir is commanding a lead in five out of six constituencies of Mombasa.
According to the results released by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Nassir is leading in Jomvu, Changamwe, Nyali, Mvita and Likoni constituencies with 97,286 votes.
His competitor who is the UDA candidate Hassan Omar garnered 77,358 votes in the five constituencies.
Tallying is still ongoing in Kisauni constituency.
The two candidates faced stiff competition where Nassir had 15,629 votes in Jomvu constituency while Hassan Omar had 11,038 votes.
In Changamwe constituency, Nassir had 17,740 votes against his competitor Omar who had 15,898 votes.
Nassir who served as a member of parliament in Mvita constituency for 10 years received 24,406 votes in the area whereas Omar had 19,086 votes.
In Nyali Constituency, there was only a difference of 807 votes where Nassir had a total of 22,387 votes and Omar 21,580 votes.
In Likoni, Nassir had 17,425 votes against his competitor Omar who had 9,756 votes.
The election attracted a list of seven candidates including Hezron Awiti (VDP) who has 705 votes in the five constituencies, William Kingi (PAA) and the deputy governor of Mombasa has a total number of 471 votes.
Daniel Kitsao (Independent) has 219 votes in the five constituencies while Shafii Makazi (Upia) has 391 votes, Said Abdhalla (Usawa) has 271 votes.
Last night, celebrations rocked Mombasa Central Business District after it became apparent that Nassir is leading in many polling centres.
Jomvu MP-elect Badi Twalib said that Nassir is a visionary leader and a focused person whom they believe will take Mombasa to the next level.
“Nassir is a leader that I personally as an MP of Jomvu I have worked with for 10 years at the National Assembly and he has been so close to us,” he said.
Twalib said that the party has enough supporters and that they were not surprised with the results that were announced by the electoral commission after the general elections.
