Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o has asked the international community to protect Kenya’s democracy ahead of the Supreme Court's ruling.

In a statement on Saturday, the governor said he hopes the apex court will nullify what he termed as 'fraudulent elections' in its forthcoming judgment.

"We appeal to all progressive and democratic forces across the world to keep vigil and to mobilize all their resources to protect Kenya’s fledgling democracy," Nyong'o said.

The governor also affirmed that Kisumu residents should not expect any change in state of affairs, whatever the outcome of the Supreme Court will be.

His assurance came after the US government issued a movement restrictions alert to its citizens and employees in Kisumu.

Nyong'o said Kisumu is multiracial and ethnic peaceful community that cares deeply for each other's welfare.

The governor further urged the youth in Kisumu to remain peaceful.

The Supreme Court is expected to deliver the presidential petition verdict on Monday, September 5, 2022.

On August 15, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati declared Deputy President William Ruto the President-elect after he defeated Raila and two other candidates in the poll on August 9.

Ruto was declared winner with 7,176,141 votes, representing 50.49 per cent of the votes cast, against Raila’s 6,942,930 votes, or 48.85 per cent of the votes cast.

However, Raila rejected the declaration and promised a battle with Chebukati whom he accused of mishandling the elections. He declared the IEBC chairman's figures "null and void".

He filed a petition at the Supreme Court challenging  Ruto’s win in the August 9 poll.

Kenyans are nervously waiting for the ruling of the apex court in the petition seeking to overturn Ruto's win.
